7 Top Places To Be In Grenada

In the olden days, spices were known to be worth as much as gold. Today, a small island off to the southern end of the Caribbean proves that there is still a treasure in spices. Known as the “Spice Island” for its abundance of cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, cloves, and cocoa, Grenada sits on a bed of nourishing volcanic soil. If you are looking for a taste of the real Caribbean, Grenada offers you an enticing mix of seaside dwellings, sweeping mountains, rainforests, idyllic beaches, and a lot more.

Here are seven of the top places to be in Grenada.

1. Grand Anse Beach. Bordered by a view of coconut palms and sea grapes, this is one of the most picturesque and definitely the most famous beach in Grenada. A three-kilometer crescent of golden sand gets visited frequently by cruise ships, with many restaurants and resorts cropping up as a result. The stunning turquoise waters are perfect for a swim, and the hawkers roaming around are good places to buy souvenir trinkets from.

2. St. George’s. Known as one of the most beautiful port towns in the whole of the Caribbean, St. George is Grenada’s capital city. White houses with colorful roofs crowd around the harbor, while yachts can be seen around. Local shops are known for spices and crafts. The best views can be seen from Fort George and Fort Frederick, two of the main attractions in the city.

3. Fort Frederick. With a view of the sea and St. George’s residential area, the fort stands on a bed of local history. Constructed in 1779 and completed in 1791, the British fort is peculiar for having cannons facing inwards. This was due to a French soldier fearing a surprise land attack — the same strategy they used to defeat the British.

4. Fort George. Located to the west of the harbor, this is mainly used by the Grenadian police force. This offers a panoramic view of the red-tiled rooftops and rising church spires that is St. George’s.

5. Carenage. This is the inner anchorage of Grenada, with a pretty waterfront and a row of quaint shops. Fresh snacks and seafood can be ordered from the restaurants. The best view can be found along Wharf Road, which runs through the harbor. There is also a bronze statue — Christ of the Deep, similar to the one in Florida but this time above water — that was donated to the town by the wealthy owners of a luxury cruise.

6. Morne Rouge Bay. If you want a beautiful beach without the bustle of Grand Anse, this is the spot. Jade-colored waters surround the white-sand crescent, and the gentle waves make swimming a breeze. There are also restaurants around, with abundant foliage providing a natural shade.

7. Grand Etang National Park & Forest Reserve. A haven for biodiversity, the Park offers a beautiful hike through a rainforest. There is the crater-formed lake called the Grand Etang, as well as several trails ranging from easy to challenging. There is also the Concord Falls, which has three cascades and swimming areas. Around the park, many species of flora and fauna — orchids, birds, trees — can be found.
