Buenos Aires

Exploring Buenos Aires

I was on the Black Watch when I first visited Buenos Aires. Being the capital of Argentina, I was more than excited to explore every corner of the city – not in one go but one at a time. There’s a lot to do here – from food to “tango”, from scenic tours to shopping, and everything in between.

So for that visit, I went on a tour to Tigre, a beautiful waterside town north of Buenos Aires. It has nice parks and amazing water views – it’s a must-do scenic tour in Buenos Aires.

Then, about 3 or 4 years later, I was back in Buenos Aires – I was on the Balmoral at that time. Guess where I went? Have you watched the movie “Evita”? Yes, I did! I was so engrossed watching that movie which from my point of view was the finest movie Madonna ever did. So, from that movie, I became an instant fan of Evita Peron.

Curiosity hit me, so, for that second visit to Buenos Aires, I made it to Evita Museum and to Evita’s Mausoleum in Recoleta Cemetery.

Then weeks ago, I was back in Buenos Aires again and that was my third. Didn’t have any big plans that day. All I wanted to do was just take a walk and explore the areas near the cruise terminal and nothing more.

From the cruise terminal, I had no idea which direction to head to. So, I just followed the general direction of the flow – to where more people headed to and coming from. I later found out I was headed to Retiro Station, Buenos Aires’ main central train station. Retiro Station is a beautifully restored grand British – designed train station located in the neighborhood of Retiro.

Across the train station is Plaza Fuerza Aérea Argentina where the towering Torre Monumental stands. Formerly known as the Tower of the English, it was later changed to its present name after the 1982 Falklands War.

Though I always love walking under the sun, that day the heat felt like too much. So, I didn’t go any farther and started walking back to the cruise terminal. The Internet inside the terminal offers a speed good enough to update apps on my iPhone but not fast enough to download movies on Netflix. After I updated all apps, I didn’t at all attempt to download movies, I knew it would just be a waste of time.
