We may not find modern underpasses in the Philippines as rich nations have. But what we have here is not to be underrated because ours is worth bragging about in some aspects.
Yesterday, I had to pass through one of Manila’s pedestrian underpasses, the Manila City Hall’s Lagusnilad underpass, to reach the other side of the road. And judging from what I observed, it was entirely different from what it was a few years back. The transformation was overwhelming!
From an unkempt, filthy, and dark dungeon-like underground walkway, it has metaphorsed into a new look and feel. It’s a new experience for passers-by in getting to Intramuros from Manila City Hall or the other way around.
At the entrance and exit paths of the underpass, you will appreciate the concept of real plant displays on the walls – called ‘vertical garden’. It is really impressive but when I passed there, I would say that the plants obviously need some water!
Walking inside the rehabilitated underpass, you will be greeted with murals and large wide screens displaying tourist spots and commuter guides. On the security aspect, the place also features 24/7 CCTV and is lit any time of the day.
You see, this is not just a simple initiative from the LGU, it’s one big inventiveness from the mind of my idol Yorme! Kudos to you Mayor Isko Moreno.
