In life, we often would aspire for the best in order to push ourselves towards a goal; others do so in order to experience the privilege and prestige that comes with the rank. But not all those who aspire achieve their life’s objectives — others remain stuck for simply being too content.
I was personally on the latter and something that I had regrets about for not realizing it sooner.
Here’s my story in brevity:
I recently passed the Theoretical Examinations for Marine Deck Officers Management Level conducted by the MARINA on May 24, 2021, at the MARINA Central Office in Manila. To those in the know, this is the type of grueling exam that seafarers have to go through to become ship officers. And by the way, I would like to thank ATLAS Deck and Engine Review Center Manila for ensuring us a 101% passing rate. When I chose ATLAS, I know passing the exam was the last thing I had to worry about.
However, therein lies my remorse—I could have had passed it way earlier, if only I pursued the idea way back in 1999, the year following the acquisition of my Second Mate license.
Counting the years up to now, I literally wasted 21 years of my life in a career that could have been so much more, if only I opted for a different choice and acted differently than what I did.
But, better late than never, I am proud to announce myself of becoming a captain by merit and is something I would also encourage to my fellow seafarers, albeit to do so at the soonest.
So, here’s my advice: do not be contented to be in a position where you only earn a good salary; learn to aim higher, take risks, and reach the pinnacle of your career—aim high, marino!
