But before anyone could see Antarctica’s snow-covered shores, one has to brave the notorious Drake Passage. It’s known for its rough seas and unpredictable weather.
Sailing Through The Drake Passage
So, as we set sail from Ushuaia, Argentina, the gateway to the Antarctic, I felt a mix of excitement and apprehension. As the Balmoral navigates in the Drake Passage, I can feel the ship started to pitch and roll moderately. It was a bit bumpy ride but according to Pedro and Carlos, our Chilean ice pilots, we had the best Drake Passage sailing. The weather here is most of the times not friendly but the one that we had was one of the friendliest!
Our ice pilots onboard had advised us the best timing to enter the Drake Passage, and their years of experience in the Chilean Navy made all the difference.
We Found Antarctica
As we progressed our course through the waves, we found Antarctica! I was blown away by the breathtaking landscapes and the sheer size of the glaciers.
